Data Science Courses on Coursera

Learning Data Science from home in 2020

Staying at home during these unprecedented times can be a great motivation to learn something new. If you’re looking to make a career shift, now is the moment to learn new skills and look for new projects. Data Science might be a perfect opportunity for you.

Data Science courses on Coursera to try in 2020. IBM Data Science and John Hopkins data science course.

Data Science is practical. It’s all about learning to code, downloading data and analysing new datasets until you get what you’re doing.

The first step however is to learn some theory. You’ll need a little knowledge of statistics and linear algebra, but you can pick it up along the way.

Then comes Python (or R sometimes). That’s the language you have to be comfortable with, but don’t worry, that will come with time and exercises.

Where to start learning Data Science?

There are 2 courses on Coursera which take you from zero to hero and are the most popular right now when it comes to Data Science. One is from IBM and the other from John Hopkins University, and both will give you an amazing exposure to basics concepts in Data Science.

IBM Data Science

This Professional Certificate from IBM is intended for anyone interested in developing skills and experience to pursue a career in Data Science or Machine Learning.

This program consists of 9 courses providing you with latest job-ready skills and techniques covering a wide array of data science topics including: open source tools and libraries, methodologies, Python, databases, SQL, data visualization, data analysis, and machine learning. You will practice hands-on in the IBM Cloud using real data science tools and real-world data sets.

Data Science by Johns Hopkins University

This course covers the concepts and tools you’ll need throughout the entire data science pipeline, from asking the right kinds of questions to making inferences and publishing results. In the final Capstone Project, you’ll apply the skills learned by building a data product using real-world data. At completion, students will have a portfolio demonstrating their mastery of the material.

What to learn after completing courses online?

If you’ve completed one or both of these courses, then the next great step is to do some reading.

You can have a look at the list of Data Science Books I’ve prepared, which vary from entry level to expert.

If you’re looking for a general knowledge about how to become a Data Scientist and what a Data Scientist do, have a look at my Data Science Job book.

Data Science vs Machine Learning

Data Science is closely related to Machine Learning and often these two terms are interchangeable. Data Science is a more broad approach to analysing data, while machine learning focuses on algorithms learning upon datasets. They can overlap in general, but the focus is a little bit different, machine learning often being more technical and computationally involved.

If you want to go into Machine Learning direction, you still can as a total beginner. Have a look at Machine Learning courses to try here.

Then you can also have a look at recommended books to read about Machine Learning.

Data Science Courses on Coursera

In conclusion Coursera is a great tool to learn online and get a certificate for it. Most of the courses are free, if you don’t need a certificate and just want to learn for yourself.

Give it a try right know.
