It’s important to understand how diseases spread in today’s world. It is clear that viruses can travel through the air, and this is why we have had epidemics of various sorts throughout history. In 1874 a measles epidemic swept the United States. By 1915, an outbreak of diphtheria occurred in Philadelphia (a city with a population of about two million people). This was followed by an outbreak of scarlet fever which killed more than daughters who came home from school sick on a hot summer day.
A great deal of attention has been focused on the 1918 flu pandemic because of the number of deaths it caused. Although there were not many deaths, one particular influenza strain proved to be particularly virulent. In 1918, the virus infected 80% of the population of New York City. There are several different strains of influenza circulating around the world at any given time.
